18. Piazza del Popolo, Rome

The Piazza del Popolo ("the place of the people") was a great centre for Roman life for centuries, hosting executions, carnivals, and all manner of entertainments. The two churches, which appear to be identical, facing the piazza are actually quite different in size, but one has been given a round dome, the other an oval dome, to make them appear similar. The obelisk was taken from Egypt.
